System Description

The KRi Benchtop Rotational Moulding Workstation RM-100 adds computer control to the rotational speeds and environment of a conventional rotational moulding system. The results are products which have uniform overall thickness and superior surface finish. As its name suggest, the RM-100 is a compact workstation with a small footprint. Therefore, it fits readily into any R&D laboratory, model shop, educational laboratory or next to mass production units. The RM-100 is most suited for rapid production of hollow objects for prototyping, experimentation, production testing or even complete short-run production. It is also excellent for teaching and demonstrating basic principles behind rotational moulding.

With computer control, the bi-axial rotational speeds can track variation of material properties with time. This method of speed control allows objects with unusual shape to be produced, which have good uniform thickness. Examples of high-value added products which can be produced on the RM-100 are medical prostheses such as ventricular pump housing, artificial limbs, ... , etc.

The moulding process is also carried out in a computer-controlled environment so that the final product is relatively free of defects such as bubbles. The enclosed environment further contains all toxic by-products emitted during the moulding process. These unwanted by-products can be readily extracted at the end to prevent pollution. The advanced and sophisticated control strategies employed in the workstation also support experimentation in composite layering techniques.

Modes of Operation

The RM-100 workstation has a built-in computer. Its menu assisted operation creates a user friendly operating environment. There are three modes of moulding operation on the RM-100 workstation : two automatic modes and one manual mode. The first automatic mode is termed "computer-aided rotational moulding" or C-ARM mode and the second "profile rotational moulding" or PRM mode.

  • Computer-Aided Rotational Moulding (C-ARM) Mode
  • In the C-ARM mode, an integrated database management system (iDMS) stores the properties of moulding materials. Two mportant properties of the material, density and viscosity, are used to control the rotational speed. The material iDMS facilitate replication of the products.

Before moulding, a set of moulding parameters are defined. Important moulding parameters to consider are size of the mould and desired thickness of the final product.

During moulding, the computer determines and adjusts the rotational speeds of the two axes as the properties of the moulding material changes with time. This speed adjustment will ensure that the final product has the uniform thickness throughout as defined.

  • Profile Rotational Moulding (PRM) Mode
  • The PRM mode allows you to program rotational speeds of each axis independently with time. In addition, you can also program (and therefore control) the environment, namely, the moulding temperature and humidity. Extremely complex rotational and environmental profiles are programmable to mould products with irregular surface profile.

Using this moulding mode, you can readily incorporate your proprietary rotational (and environmental) profiles to manufacture products for special applications.

  • Manual Mode
  • The manual mode allows the RM-100 system to operate as a conventional rotational moulding machine. It has the standard controls for the rotational speed of each axis and special controls. Rotational speeds are changed on the fly with no mechanical setup.

The special controls allow each axis to be disabled, jogged at slow speed in either direction or held at the last position. They are useful for determining optimal speed profiles and conditions for moulding products with irregular surface profile or materials of special mixture. Once the optimal speed profiles and conditions are determined, they can be programmed using the PRM mode.
